Honda introduced its very own Pioneer family to the world in 2014 with the Pioneer 700 model. And one of the latest members of this Honda Pioneer family is the Honda Pioneer 1000 UTV model.

Honda uses superior raw materials and combines them with the latest technology and refined engineering to produce Pioneer 1000 vehicles.

Still, like any other quality utility vehicle, these UTVs also have a fair share of downsides.

1. Clutch Problem

One common complaint that several users have mentioned in different Honda User forums is the clutch issue. Those users also claimed that they had to replace the clutches quite frequently.

But users often overlook that clutch issues can occur on any utility vehicle at some point. Especially these issues are unavoidable when UTV vehicles go through aggressive operation periods.

Mainly there are two basic reasons behind encountering clutch problem either driver error or overheating.

The good news is Honda has acknowledged the issue and claimed that most clutch issues on the Pioneer 1000 vehicle are occurring due to driver error.

Honda recommends that when riders are not on level ground at speed, they should stop the clutch packs in the low range from slipping or overheating.

Sometimes, users even complain that their UTV tires got stuck in the mud and cannot bring out the tires from that mud hole.

If the mud is the gumbo type, Honda suggests the users stop trying to take out the Pioneer 1000’s tires, if they do not naturally turn. Also, users should not use the reverse gear to back out either.

According to Honda, taking the reverse turn can potentially burn the clutch packs.

The only remedy that Honda has approved for such a situation is to tow or winch out your vehicle from the mud.

Besides that, Honda also highly recommends purchasing a clutch cover with the main vehicle for additional coolant oil protection.

Also, Honda has reminded the users several times to follow the instruction manual or guidelines to avoid issues like overheating or slipping clutch packs that mostly occur due to operator abuse.

2. Not Shifting Properly Or Hard Shifting Issue

Another commonly mentioned problem is the shifting trouble. One pioneer 1000 eps user claimed that while he was on the coyote hunting, he rode his vehicle through some mud holes as well as up and downhills.

But the journey was not smooth at all, he drove 40 hard miles, and the actual issue started when he was returning from the hunt.

Initially, he noticed that the vehicle would not shift long right. Then, the vehicle started to shift when it should not and ended up popping into neutral. He also noticed that the oil light would come on and eventually refused to go into any gear at all. In the end, he had to shut off the engine and turn back again.

Although you cannot come up with a conclusion without breaking in and investigating thoroughly, some Pioneer 1000 users claim that some models have a problem with some ground wires under the vehicle driver’s seat, and fixing that ground wiring also fixes this type of issue.

Shifting trouble can also occur by using moly or graphite oils.

Honda has already mentioned not to use moly or graphite oils in the user manual because when you use moly for a longer time, it can potentially burn the clutches and cause the shifting problem.

Shifting gear issues might also occur when you miss one or both bolts that hold the shift linkage in place.

3. Engine May Shuts Off Abruptly

Several users also claimed that they have encountered that the Pioneer 1000 UTV’s engine sometimes shuts off abruptly.

One particular user even mentioned that his engine shuts off every 10 minutes. He further explained the scenario where his vehicle initially starts perfect, drives, and shifts perfectly too. Even the engine sounds great and works smoothly, but when turning to a stop, the engine jerks slightly forward and dies.

Another user claimed the same issue, but he noticed that the random shutting off problem especially occurs whenever the vehicle attempts to go up the hills under hard loads.

This type of problem generally occurs due to battery, bad oil or ground clearance issues. It can also happen because of broken clutches, faulty trans or diffs connections.

Sometimes, the plugged filters can get extremely clogged and causes such trouble.

The immediate action should be checking all the key areas such as battery condition, battery terminals and cables connection, transmission, diffs, gasket, and all filters.

4. Fuel Injector Wiring Issue

Several Pioneer 1000 users have claimed on Honda ATV & UTV user forums that they experienced sudden engine shutting off while driving down the trail.

Initially, people guess that something might be wrong with the plugs, fuel, battery, or electrical wiring connections.

But reportedly, this problem also occurs because of the faulty wiring harness assembly on the fuel injector, and several Honda dealers have already confirmed that they have been dealing with similar cases very often.

According to one user, he also noticed that when the engine suddenly starts to shut off, it also gives out 1 long flash and 3 short flashes blinking code. This blinking code directly indicates towards the rear injector, and the user also claimed that this code only shows up whenever the engine shuts off like that.

The good news is it is easily fixable by simply replacing the wiring harness and if your vehicle is under warranty, you can get the replacement service free of cost from the Honda dealer.

Even if your vehicle is not under warranty anymore, the cost of the replacement is quite cheap.

5. Recall Due To Muffler Overheating

Honda previously received a total of 22 complaints from the previous Pioneer 1000 model users where they noticed overheating issues.

After a thorough investigation, Honda recalled 65000 Pioneer 1000 models because of the faulty muffler assembling.

The good news is that there was no record or report of any severe damage or injury due to those affected models.

This recall includes all the models released in 2016-2017 and some of the 2018 models.

According to Honda, the factory assembled mufflers on those Pioneer models can overheat, which can potentially cause the plastic heat shield to melt or catch fire.

On 15th May 2018, Honda officially recalled all the affected vehicles.

What Majority of the Users Feel About Honda Pioneer 1000?

Many critics and experts particularly mentioned in their review blogs about several upgrades that Honda came up with for the latest released Pioneer 1000 models. 

The newly added upgrades such as hill-start assist, electronic distribution of brake force, and others enhance the style, suspension performance, user protection, comfort, and convenience.

However, many users even pointed on the common issues that they experienced with Pioneer 1000. Some users even claimed that there are a few common issues such as heating and clutch, which the company should have already gotten rid of by now.

But people should also keep in mind those are not uniquely happening with only the Pioneer series and it’s more likely the opposite those problems are arising with almost all utility vehicles out there.
